League leaders Liverpool face promoted Leicester City at home. Forecast, 26.12.24

Can Liverpool live up to their role as favorites?

Published on 23.12.2024 16:29.

Liverpool FC welcome promoted Leicester City on Boxing Day. The hosts are of course the heavy favorites to win. While the Reds are in first place in the table, Leicester currently only occupy 17th place and are therefore in the relegation battle. The poor performances at the start of the season were also the main reason why the Foxes have already made a change of manager to Ruud van Nistelrooy. Liverpool do not have these problems, as coach Arne Slot has exceeded all expectations so far this fall and wants to continue to do so next year.

Current form Liverpool FC

Liverpool FC kick off the Christmas holidays with a match against promoted Leicester City. On paper, this shouldn't be too much of a hurdle - after all, as league leaders they face the current 17th-placed team in the league. However, manager Arne Slot knows how important the Christmas period is in the Premier League and therefore rested numerous key players in the EFL Cup against Southampton. Among others, Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk and Luis Diaz were given a break. The team still managed to win the game 1:2 and thus remained unbeaten for the 20th competitive game in a row. The last and only defeat of the season came on matchday 4 at home against Nottingham Forest (0:1). It was also the only game this season in which they failed to score. Otherwise, Liverpool are responsible for just under 2.00 goals per game. The showpiece, however, remains the defense, which is still the best in the Premier League.

Liverpool still have every chance of winning the title

In the Premier League, they are now the number one title contenders, while in the Champions League they lead the table quite clearly with 6 wins from 6 games and are therefore one of the absolute favorites for the title there too. They have only conceded a single goal in 6 games. In the EFL Cup, they absolutely deserve to be in the semi-finals after wins against West Ham (5:1), Brighton (2:3) and now Southampton (1:2). As is well known, the FA Cup does not start until the new year. However, coach Arne Slot's team are among the clear title contenders in all four competitions.

Leicester City find it surprisingly difficult

For many, this season's strongest promoted team has yet to find its feet in the Premier League. The Foxes' aim this year was surely to spend a quiet year in mid-table in order to develop. However, after 16 matchdays and a change of manager, Leicester are only 17th in the table and are fully involved in the relegation battle. Only a few points separate them from a relegation place at the moment. Coach Ruud van Nistelrooy should now lead them upwards step by step. They got off to a good start with a 3-1 win against West Ham and a 2-2 draw against Brighton. Both teams that are potentially stronger. On the last matchday, however, they suffered a 4-0 defeat at Newcastle United and now face the league leaders. Leicester must first and foremost stabilize their defence, as they are currently the 3rd weakest of all teams. They have only managed to keep a clean sheet in one game this season and that was in the 1-0 win over Bournemouth at the beginning of October. In 5 of their last 6 games, they have conceded 2 or more goals. This is the 6th time in a row that the visitors have conceded more than 2.5 goals. In 13 of 16 games, goals were scored by both sides.

The guests certainly have quality in their squad

Leicester are certainly the strongest of the three promoted teams and also have the most quality. In defense, they have plenty of experience with Conor Coady and Jannik Vestergaard. They also have this in midfield with the two former Tottenham youngsters Harry Winks and Oliver Skipp. In attack, the club invested primarily in talent in the summer. Facunodo Buonanotte, Issahaku Fatawu and Bilal El Khannous are all 20 years old or younger. With Jamie Vardy and Jordan Ayew, this should be a good mix. There are also at least 5 players in the squad with 2 or more goals to their name.

Liverpool get the must-win - Our analysis

Liverpool FC are hard to beat this season and are naturally the big favorites at home against the newly promoted team. Anything other than a win would therefore surprise us. We would even recommend a handicap bet (0:1) bet 1. For a combined betting slip, a bet on over 2.5 goals could also be worthwhile. This is made possible by the visitors' weak defense and talented offense.
