Monaco will be looking to upset serial champions Paris St. Germain at home. Prediction, 18.12.24

The Monegasques want to cause a surprise in the top match

Published on 12.12.2024 07:02.

AS Monaco have had a very strong season so far under coach Adi Hütter, both in the Champions League and in Ligue 1. After 14 matchdays, they have 29 points and are therefore among the first chasers of league leaders Paris. The gap is currently 5 points, so a defeat would probably see them lose touch. After Lyon, PSG have the next top match ahead of them. Having been anything but convincing in the Champions League so far, winning the league title is almost a must for coach Luis Enrique. A defeat against a direct rival is therefore something they should not allow themselves. However, Monaco are not necessarily one of the visitors' favorite opponents, which is why we expect an exciting game.

AS Monaco is in good form in all competitions

Coach Adi Hütter will be very satisfied with his team's performance this season. After impressing last year, they have been able to go one better this year and are one of the positive surprises, especially in the Champions League. In Ligue 1, they are in 3rd place with 29 points after 14 match days. This makes them one of the first pursuers of league leaders Paris St. Germain. Monaco have won 9 out of 14 games and have only been beaten 3 times. In contrast to previous years, they have been particularly impressive defensively this year. While they can't keep up with the best teams in the league with 24 goals, they are one of the best defenses with only 12 goals conceded. Only the league leaders conceded one goal less. Monegasque have only conceded 6 goals in 8 home games. Thus only one of 8 home games was lost and this was somewhat surprisingly on matchday 10 against Angers. Most recently, there were again 2 home wins against Brest and Toulouse. They scored a strong 5 goals in these two games. In 3 of their 8 home games, they have not conceded a goal.

Monaco is on course for a play-off in the Champions League

Monaco have already picked up 10 points in 5 Champions League games so far. They are currently 11th in the table and can move back into the top six with a win against Arsenal on Wednesday. Although this would be a minor sensation, Monaco have already beaten FC Barcelona in this Champions League season. The only defeat came on matchday 5 at home against Benfica (2:3), where they also conceded 3 of their 7 goals. They won their last away game against Bologna 0:1. It was the only game in which they did not concede a goal.

Paris wants to extend its lead in Ligue 1

The only thing that counts for Paris in the league is the title. In the last 3 years, they have always been able to secure it. In Luis Enrique's first season, they also became French champions with aplomb. Little seems to have changed this season, as Paris have marched to the front right from the start. They are the only team still unbeaten and have the best offense and defense of all teams. On average, they score just under 2.5 goals per game and concede less than 1.00 goals. PSG can mostly rely on the goals of Bradley Barcola. The young Frenchman is by far his team's top scorer with 10 goals already. Coach Luis Enrique hardly has to do without any injured players and can currently draw from the full squad. This will also be necessary in the top match against Monaco, because a defeat would reduce the lead and the pressure would be much higher. They also gained some confidence in the Champions League when they kept a clean sheet against Red Bull Salzburg in a 0:3 away win.

Monaco is not Paris' favorite opponent

The serial champions have been struggling in the top matches against AS Monaco of late. The visitors have only won once in their last five matches. That was last season when they won 5-2 at home. In Monaco, Paris have been winless for 4 games. After 3 defeats in a row, they at least managed a 0-0 draw in their last away game. In 2 of the last 3 matches in Monaco, Paris have even failed to score.

Monaco can do a lot at home - Our analysis

AS Monaco do not want to let the gap to Paris get too big and therefore cannot afford to lose. The head-to-head meetings also speak in favor of the hosts, as they have not lost to Paris in 4 home games. A double chance 1/X is therefore suitable as a betting tip. Both teams are shining in the league this year with a stable defense. We therefore also expect less than 3.5 goals in the match.
