The Spurs want to knock the reigning champions out of the competition at home
Manchester City is once again the most stable team in the English Premier League this year and is unsurprisingly in first place in the table after nine matchdays. However, the reigning champions have evidently struggled in recent weeks and have only won their games by the narrowest of margins. In the round of 16 duel against Tottenham in the EFL Cup, they will now have to improve significantly if they are to achieve promotion. Tottenham has potential, but is not consistent enough
Spurs had a good first season under Ange Postecoglu and finished 5th in the Premier League. This year, the goal is clearly to reach the top 4 in the league. The team is now one of the most attractive attacking teams in the league and plays attractive soccer, but their performances have not been consistent enough so far. Spurs have already conceded 4 defeats in 9 games this year and are therefore only 8th in the table. They are already 10 points adrift of rivals Manchester City, but the team is finding it particularly difficult away from home, where they have only won once in 5 games. However, that was a 0:3 at Manchester United. At home, they are much stronger and have won 3 out of 4 games. The only defeat was against FC Arsenal (0:1). It was one of 2 games in which they failed to score. This was also the case last weekend in the 1:0 away defeat against Crystal Palace. The absence of captain Heung-min Son, who is still out with a thigh problem, is particularly painful. Nevertheless, the South Korean is still his team's top scorer along with Brennan Johnson.

Still without blemish in the cup competitions
After finishing 5th last season, Spurs are playing in the Europa League this season and are naturally one of the big favorites for the title. They have lived up to this role so far, winning all 3 games. With 9 points to their name and a goal difference of 6:1, they are in second place in the table. It almost seems like a law of nature in recent years that Manchester City end up winning the Premier League. In the league in particular, they have only managed very narrow victories against Fulham (3:2), Wolverhampton (1:2) and Southampton (1:0). At the same time, however, this is also what has flushed Manchester City back into first place. The only two points lost were away at Newcastle and at home against Arsenal. There has not yet been a defeat this season. The last time they lost away to Aston Villa was on matchday 15 of last season. The outstanding man is once again Erling Haaland. He has already scored 14 goals in 13 competitive matches this season and is the only player in his team with more than three goals to his name.
