Who will stay in the League Cup title race?
One of two semi-final duels will take place in the Cup on Tuesday. Liga Portugal leaders Sporting Lisbon will face their closest rivals FC Porto. The winner of this match will advance to the final and will therefore be very close to winning their first title of the new year. There is no real favorite, as both teams have exactly 40 points in the league. Sporting, however, have the home advantage and recently celebrated a 1-0 win over Benfica in the league, which is why they are considered slight favorites by the bookmakers. Sporting back on the winning track
Following the change of coach, things have not been going well for Sporting in recent weeks and they have squandered their lead in the league. The club reacted quickly and decided to appoint Rui Borges as the new head coach. Although he has only played one game so far, the change appears to have paid off. In the derby against Benfica, the team won 1:0 at home. This also kept them at the top of the league table, but with 40 points they are level with Porto. They are now their next opponents in the League Cup. Sporting will be relying on their home strength. They have won 7 out of 8 home games in Portugal this season. They have scored a strong 19 goals and conceded just 5. Their only defeat came on 30.11 against Santa Clara. It was also their only game without scoring. This was one of two defeats for Sporting this season.

Sporting wants to seize its first title opportunity
They are currently top of the league table, but have two strong opponents in Porto and Benfica in the battle for the championship. In the Champions League, however, they are not among the title favorites after a good start. With two recent defeats against Arsenal and Bruges, they have also slipped to 17th place in the table. The title that is probably the easiest to get hold of at the moment is the League Cup. After a win in the semi-final against Benfica, they are now only separated by a single victory. Incidentally, they won 3:1 against Nacional in the quarter-finals.
