Panama fight for their first point at the Copa America
Panama failed to qualify for the last Copa America finals. They managed to do so this year, but of course they are now one of the big outsiders. After the first matchday, they are in 3rd place in Group C behind Uruguay and the USA, but ahead of Bolivia. They lost their first game 3:1 against Uruguay. After trailing 3-0, right-back Amir Murillo scored the consolation goal. Basically, however, they simply didn't have the quality to win this game. Should they also lose against the USA, they would be eliminated from the group stage. A draw would still give them a chance to finish second against Bolivia on the final matchday.
In general, however, things have been going well for Panama in recent years, as they have taken a clear step forward under coach Thomas Christiansen. Under the Spaniard, they have won 31 of their last 61 games and have only been beaten 16 times. In total, this results in a strong points average of 1.75 points per game. However, 2024 has certainly not gone according to plan so far, as they lost the semi-final against Mexico 3-0 at the CONCACAF Nations League Finals, followed by a 1-0 defeat against Jamaica in the match for third place. USA wants to book its place in the quarter-finals early
The visitors are the clear favorites in the match against Panama. The USA are definitely aiming for the Copa America title this year, even if they are not among the absolute top favorites. These are still Argentina and Brazil. However, the Americans definitely want to reach the quarter-finals and they will almost certainly need a win against Panama to do so. They have already won their first match 2:0 against Bolivia. The showdown against Uruguay could then take place on the final matchday. However, they would have secured 2nd place if they beat Panama.
The USA has developed very positively in recent years and reached the round of 16 at the last World Cup, among other things. Coach Gregg Berhalter has been on the sidelines for several years and led his team to the CONCACAF Nations League Finals title in March this year. They defeated Mexico 2:0 in the final. However, preparations for the Copa America did not go smoothly. In the first test match, they were beaten 5-1 by Colombia. It was the highest defeat for several years. In the second test match, they at least managed a respectable 1:1 against Brazil. In the past 5 international matches, they have always managed to score at least one goal. In the duel against Panama, the aim will certainly be to keep the score at zero.
In the first group game against Bolivia, the two attacking stars Christian Pulisic and Florian Balogun were responsible for the goals. The coach will therefore not rotate much in attack. However, with Malik Tillman, Ricardo Pepi and Brenden Aaronson on the bench, there are still players who can pose a threat.
