Juventus, unlike Benfica, are already guaranteed a place in the play-offs. Prediction, 29.01.25

The Portuguese need at least one point

Published on 23.01.2025 10:01.

Juventus are playing anything but an outstanding Champions League season and are only in 17th place. Unlike their opponents, however, they can already plan for the play-offs, as they are 4 points ahead of 25th place. After 3 draws in the last 4 games, they would of course like a win on the final matchday. The visitors from Lisbon will invest everything in this game, however, as they need something tangible. With 10 points, they are only 2 points ahead of 25th place, so the Portuguese side need at least a point and a bit of help. A win would see them secure a place in the play-offs and even overtake the Old Lady.

Juventus could still make it into the top 8

The Old Lady is firmly in the play-offs in this Champions League season. With 12 points to their name, they currently occupy 17th place in the table and are already 4 points ahead of Manchester City, who are currently in 25th place. Although the chance of a top 8 place is no longer high, it is still mathematically possible with just one point behind. However, the basic prerequisite for this is a win at home against Benfica Lisbon. Juve have remained unbeaten in their last 4 games in the top flight, but 3 of them ended in a draw. Their only defeat in 7 games came at home to VfB Stuttgart (0:1). Since then, two 0-0 draws against Aston Billa and Bruges followed, as well as a 1-1 draw against Lille and a 2-0 win against Manchester City. The Italians are usually very solid in defense and have conceded just 5 goals in 7 games. They have not conceded a single goal in their last 3 games. In offense, however, there is certainly room for improvement with 9 goals. Randal Kolo Muani could also be introduced as a new player in the near future. The Frenchman is expected to fill the thin personnel cover in the center forward position.

The old lady is hard to beat

Despite the numerous draws, both in the league and in the Champions League, it must be noted that Juve have only conceded two defeats so far this season. One of them in the Champions League against Stuttgart and one in the Italian Super Cup against AC Milan. Otherwise, the hosts are still completely unbeaten and therefore very difficult to overcome. In the league, they also went 2-0 up against AC Milan on the last matchday without conceding a goal. They have never conceded more than one goal per game since the end of December. With Renato Veiga, they have now brought in further defensive reinforcements from Chelsea FC.

Benfica probably need at least a point

The Portuguese side got off to a very good start to this Champions League season, picking up 6 points from their first two games. This included a 4:0 home win against Atletico Madrid! After this success, however, they only managed to win one of their five games, a 3-2 away win at AS Monaco, with defeats against Bayern and Feyenoord Rotterdam in between. In their last two home games, they picked up a point in a 0-0 draw against Bologna and conceded a 4-5 defeat in a spectacular game against FC Barcelona. With a 2-point lead in 25th place, they are in a good starting position, but there is still a risk of slipping down the table if they lose. A draw would mean they are as good as safe. The visitors will therefore attack to take something countable with them. This season, they have mostly worked through their offense. They have scored 14 goals in 7 games, which equates to 2.00 goals per game. They have also conceded 12 goals, 5 of which came against Barcelona on the last matchday alone. Away from home, they have conceded 4 goals in 3 games.

Title win, but weak performances in the league

Benfica won their first title in 2025 just a few weeks ago, beating Braga in the semi-finals of the Allianz Cup and then Sporting Lisbon in the final. They also won the Portuguese Cup 1:3 against Farense. In the league, however, things have not necessarily gone according to plan recently. They have lost two top games in a row. First, they were beaten 1:0 by Sporting and then they also conceded a 1-2 defeat at home to Braga. On the last matchday, however, they were able to recover somewhat and won 4:0 at home against Famalicao.

Few goals are to be expected - Our forecast

Juventus are hard to beat at home and have only conceded 5 goals this Champions League season. Benfica have not necessarily been convincing in recent matches. A point would be very good for the play-offs, otherwise they risk slipping down the table. But they won't risk too much. We therefore believe that less than 2.5 goals will be scored in this game and a tip X would also be recommended as a single betting slip.
