Italy will play the quarter-final first leg against Germany at home. Prediction, 20.03.25

Will Germany remain unbeaten in the Nations League?

Published on 18.03.2025 23:03.

The Nations League is entering the decisive phase and the quarter-finals will see a top clash between Italy and Germany. Both teams have shown convincing performances so far, Germany even remained unbeaten in 6 group games and scored a strong 18 goals. However, following the loss of Florian Wirtz, they will be missing an important attacking player in the first leg in Italy. Although the Squadra Azzurra only finished second in their group, they finished level on points with France. Italy have only lost one game and that was at home against France (1:3). Before that, they went 5 games unbeaten, beating Belgium and France away from home. They will of course want to win the first leg at home against Germany.

Italy regains its old strength

Since Luciano Spalletti took over as Italy's new national team coach, there has been a noticeable development and the Squadra Azzurra can once again be counted among the strongest national teams in Europe. They have shown this impressively in the Nations League season so far. They finished in a commanding 2nd place in their group ahead of Israel and Belgium. In the end, they had as many points as the big favorites France after 6 games and only had to settle for second place due to the worse goal difference. One of the main reasons for this was the 3:1 home defeat against the French on the final matchday. It was Italy's first and only defeat in this Nations League season. Prior to that, they had gone 5 games unbeaten in a row and also picked up 5 wins. Among others, they defeated Belgium and France away from home. Italy scored at least one goal in each of their 6 group games, but only managed to keep a clean sheet once. The style of play is therefore somewhat atypical for Italy. In the end, the goal difference was 13:8.

Italy has the big names in defense

A look at the squad shows that Italy has its most notable players in defense. Here you will find top international players such as Alessandro Bastoni, Riccardo Calafiori and Andrea Cambiaso. Nicolo Barella and Sandro Tonali, who are in top form this season, are likely to form the center of midfield. In the attack, however, the really big names are missing. With players like Mateo Retegui and Moise Kean, however, they have players in absolute top form. These two have already scored 37 goals in Serie A alone this season.

Germany is in a similar phase to its opponent

The German national team has also had a new strong man on the sidelines since 2023 in the shape of Julian Nagelsmann. The former Bayern coach has certainly initiated a small upheaval and has done so extremely convincingly. They reached the quarter-finals of the European Championships in the summer of 2024 and were only narrowly eliminated by the eventual European champions Spain. In the Nations League, the team remained unbeaten in 6 group games and thus confidently won the group ahead of the Netherlands. The final result was a record of 4 wins and 2 draws, as well as a goal difference of 18:4 goals. This gave them the strongest offense in the entire Nations League. They celebrated a 7:0 home win against Bosnia alone and won 5:0 against Hungary. Away, on the other hand, they had a much harder time. Here they were unable to get more than a draw against the defeats (2:2) and Hungary (1:1). They also had a tough time against Bosnia and only narrowly won 1:2. Nevertheless, they have remained unbeaten in their last 6 games and would like to continue this streak.

Nagelsmann relies on experience

Coach Julian Nagelsmann has nominated a rather experienced squad for this training course, as can be seen from the average age of over 28 years. He continues to rely on established players who have not been in top form recently. These certainly include Robert Andrich, Pascal Groß and Leroy Sane. A debutant, Yann Bisseck, has also been nominated who is playing well at Inter Milan and offers an alternative in central defense. Following the absence of Florian Wirtz, Karim Adeyemi will also get another chance this time. Together with Sane and Leweling, the Dortmund player should provide speed.

Balanced game invites risk - Our forecast

Italy and Germany both presented themselves very strongly last year and put in convincing performances in the Nations League. It is therefore extremely difficult to name a favorite and we would not be surprised by a draw. However, such a betting tip is particularly suitable for a single bet. Italy have been very good under Spalletti so far, especially offensively. A little untypical for Italy, but we believe in more than 2.5 goals in the match.
