A struggling Liverpool face Newcastle United at home. Prediction, 31.01.2026

Will the Reds fall further down the table?

Published on 28.01.2026 17:22.

Liverpool FC is going through a difficult phase once again. The Reds are simply not getting going this season and coach Arne Slot is coming under increasing pressure. They recently went winless in 5 Premier League games in a row and after 4 draws, they even conceded a defeat on the last matchday. Another defeat against Newcastle could even see them drop out of the top 10 in the table. However, the Magpies have to score a goal to win this game and this has not always been easy for them this season. They have also failed to win their last two games in the league, failing to score a single goal.

Liverpool struggling for form

The Reds seemed to have recovered somewhat in the meantime and at least settled in 4th place in the table. However, this phase now seems to be history again, as the team has been struggling again for several weeks and has now slipped to 6th place in the table. They have gone winless in their last 5 Premier League games, picking up just 4 points. After 4 draws in a row, they were beaten 3:2 by AFC Bournemouth on the last matchday. Despite good performances in the Champions League, coach Arne Slot is under a lot of pressure and needs results. A win is also hugely important from a table perspective, as a defeat could even see them slip out of the top 10 in the tight standings. They also have to keep up with 4th-placed Manchester United. In order to achieve this, they must be more secure defensively.

A different face is shown in the Champions League

In the top flight, it is all the more astonishing that the team is in a good 4th place and has to play Qarabag Agdam on the last matchday. A place in the top 8 should therefore be guaranteed. They have won 5 of their 7 games. Most recently, they won convincingly against Inter Milan (0:1) and Marseille (0:3). They also kept a clean sheet in both games. They even beat Real Madrid 1:0 at home. However, the two defeats came against much tougher teams such as Galatasaray and PSV Eindhoven.

Newcastle lack consistency this season

The Magpies have had a similar fate to Liverpool FC this season. Instead of fighting for a Champions League spot, they have actually been outside the top six for the entire season. After a truly disastrous start, they were able to recover in the meantime and at least made a leap into the top 10 in the table. However, the last two matchdays have only yielded one point again and the form curve is clearly pointing downwards again. First there was a 0-0 draw against bottom-of-the-table Wolverhampton and most recently they were beaten 2-0 by Aston Villa. In general, the newly formed attack is struggling after the departure of Alexander Isak and has only scored 32 goals in 23 games. The away performances are an even bigger problem. In 11 away games, they have only managed to pick up 10 points. They have won just 2 of 11 away games and have been beaten 5 times. With only 10 goals, they are responsible for less than one goal per game.

Also a top team internationally

The situation in the Champions League is similar to that of their opponents, as they are putting in top performances there. Newcastle are in 7th place in the table one matchday before the end of the group stage and would therefore go straight through to the round of 16. However, with 13 points in their account and PSG as their last opponent, it will be difficult to stay in the top 8. Especially as they have been a little unlucky so far and have failed to win games against top teams such as Barca (1:2) or Leverkusen (2:2). In addition, they have only won one of their three away games in the top flight.

No favorite in this game - Our prediction

Liverpool have not won any of their last 5 games. Newcastle have failed to score in their last two games. There is therefore no clear favorite. In the first duel, Liverpool won 2:3. Once again, we can imagine that the two teams will not give each other anything and there will be more than 3.5 goals. In any case, goals are to be expected on both sides.
