Barcelona still has a chance to lead the table
FC Barcelona are back at the top of Europe, as this Champions League season has shown very impressively. The hosts have won 6 out of 7 group games so far in the new mode and are therefore in 2nd place. Only Liverpool FC have been successful, but a win on the final matchday would even give them the chance to overtake the English side. Barcelona currently have the best goal difference of all teams and this is mainly due to their outstanding offense. 26 goals were scored in 7 games, which is almost 4.00 goals per game. On the last matchday there was a 4:5 victory away at Benfica. It was the 6th game in a row where Barcelona scored at least 3 goals. Defensively, however, they are much more vulnerable. Only in the game against Brest did they manage to keep a clean sheet. They have conceded 6 goals in the last two matchdays alone. Barca must show more stable performances
However, it may still be a little too early for the team to hit the big time this season, as the fluctuations in performance under coach Hansi Flick are extreme. After a 5:2 win against Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup, they only managed a 1:1 draw against FC Getafe a few days later. In general, they have failed to win any of their last four league games, including a home defeat against Leganes. In the Champions League, on the other hand, they won 4:1 against Bayern. The top stars are back on board
Atalanta can now call on almost all the key players in the squad again. Giorgio Scalvini is back after a cruciate ligament injury and is slowly getting back into good form. Top striker Mateo Retegui is also back after missing a few weeks in December. The Italian also scored a goal on the last matchday in the Champions League against Sturm Graz.
