Runners-up Club Brugge face KRC Genk at home. Forecast, 27.07.25

Who will start the new season successfully?

Published on 23.07.2025 11:00.

In Belgium, the new season kicks off with a real showdown. On match day 1, reigning runners-up Club Brugge will face off against last year's third-placed KRC Genk Both teams will be satisfied with last season and are naturally considered to be major title contenders again this year. However, as is so often the case, both teams have already had to lose one or two key players. It will therefore be exciting to see who starts the new season better. Based on their form at the end of last season, Bruges are probably the slight favorites in this match. After all, the hosts have only lost one game in the championship round and have remained unbeaten in their last 7 competitive games.

Club Brugge wants to build on its strong performances

The hosts played well at the end of last season and finished 2nd in the championship group, just behind champions Union Saint Gilloise. In the end, they were just 3 points short of the championship title. Coach Nicky Hayen will nevertheless be satisfied with his team's performance. In the championship group, they only lost one game out of 10 and that was at home against the champions. They remained unbeaten in their last 7 games last season, winning 5 of them. Among others, they defeated their opponents KRC Genk away from home 0:2, with the team excelling in offense. In the end, they scored 86 goals in 40 games and were clearly number 1 in Belgium. They also managed to stabilize defensively towards the end of the season, as they never conceded more than one goal per game in the last 8 matchdays. As is so often the case, the club had to let one or two key players go in the summer. This time, they lost two great talents to the Premier League in Maxim de Cuyper and Chemsdine Talbi. The hosts will, however, go into the game with great confidence, having celebrated a 2-1 victory over champions Union Saint-Gilloise in the Super Cup and thus already clinched their first title.

KRC Genk aims for a successful start to the new season

The visitors also played a very strong season, but had to let their guard down a little at the end. In the championship group, they only managed 4 wins and at the same time suffered 5 defeats. In the end, they were 9 points behind league leaders Union Saint-Gilloise, despite having the most wins of any team with 25. Coach Thorsten Fink had already come in for some criticism due to the weak championship season, but he remained in charge for the time being. They at least managed to win their last two competitive matches, winning 1:4 at Gent and 2:1 against RSC Anderlecht. What also speaks in favor of the visitors is that they have performed very well away from home. They have only lost 2 of their last 10 away games in Belgium. One of them, however, was against their opponents from Bruges. Apart from the 1:4 win against Gent, the team struggled in the final weeks of last season, particularly in attack. They failed to score in 3 of their last 5 games and only scored as many goals in the last 8 matchdays. 6 of them in the last two games alone. They also lost a strong winger in Christopher Bonsu Baah to FC Nantes.

Bruges is the favorite at home - Our prediction

Club Brugge are the reigning runners-up and were the team with the strongest form on the final matchdays of last season. They also won both of their last two matches against Genk. For us, the hosts are therefore the favorites. Genk have had great difficulties in offense recently, while Bruges already showed a stable defense in the Supercup. As a risky betting tip, a winning tip to zero could therefore also be suitable.
