The Red Devils certainly imagined a different start to Euro 2024
Belgium were the heavy favorites to win Group E and advance to the round of 16. After the first matchday, however, it was clear that Belgium lacked much of what had made them so strong in recent months. In the duel against Slovakia, they were ultimately narrowly beaten 1:0. The pressure is now on against Romania on matchday 2, as anything less than a win could mean the end of the tournament. The Romanians will arrive with plenty of confidence. With a 3:0 victory over Ukraine, they have probably been the positive surprise so far at this European Championship. Despite these performances, Belgium are of course still favorites.

Belgium still has its sights set on winning the group
The Red Devils started the European Championship as clear favorites in Group E. Anything other than winning the group would be a big surprise. After the first matchday, however, this was a long way off. After a very disappointing performance against Slovakia and the associated 0:1 defeat, they are only in third place in the group. The pressure on matchday 2 is now enormous, as another defeat could see them bow out of the European Championships early. A win is therefore a must for Belgium. However, a strong opponent awaits with Romania.
It was Belgium's first defeat under their coach Domenico Tedesco. He has been in charge since March 2023 and has already played 15 international matches with his team. They have won 10 of these 15 games and drawn four. The match against Slovakia was also only the second in which they failed to score a goal. Previously, they only failed to do so in the test match against Ireland. With a total of 33 goals in 15 games, they are normally responsible for more than 2.00 goals per game. Before the start of the European Championship, they were also extremely stable in defense. In 5 of the last 6 games, they managed to stay without conceding a goal. In the clash against Slovakia, three players - Orel Mangala, Youri Tielemans and Dodi Lukebakio - were shown a yellow card.
The truth is, however, that Belgium missed a number of high-caliber opportunities against Slovakia. Among other things, two goals by Romelu Lukaku were disallowed. The record goalscorer experienced a very unfortunate evening overall.

The Romanians are brimming with self-confidence
Romania's successful qualification for Euro 2024 was already a great success. In the group with Belgium, Ukraine and Slovakia, they certainly believe they have a chance of advancing to the knockout phase. After the first matchday, it seems clear that anything other than the round of 16 would be a bitter disappointment. The performance on matchday 1 against Ukraine, who they beat 3:0, was too good. It was probably the biggest surprise at this Euro so far. Logically, they are now leading the group and want to defend this lead. In the match against Belgium, however, they would probably also be more than satisfied with a point.
The performance in the match against Ukraine is all the more astonishing when you consider that things did not go according to plan before the European Championship. Romania are still without a win in 2024 and only managed a 0-0 draw against Bulgaria and Liechtenstein in their preparations. Prior to that, there was a 3:2 defeat against Colombia and a 1:1 draw against Northern Ireland. However, they also showed a different face in the European Championship qualifiers. There they beat Switzerland 1:0 at home and won 1:2 at Israel. The Romanians' strength was usually a very secure defense. They have not conceded a goal in 3 games. In 25 games under Edward Iordanescu, only 22 goals were conceded. In Radu Dragusin, they also have a world-class player in central defense who is currently under contract with Tottenham Hotspur.
Several players stood out in the win against Ukraine. But the outstanding man was probably captain Nicolae Stanciu. The 31-year-old was involved in almost every attacking move and scored what was probably the most beautiful goal of the finals so far.
