Austria start their World Cup qualifying campaign at home against Romania. Prediction, 07.06.25

Important match for both teams

Published on 04.06.2025 10:08.

Austria is certainly the clear favorite to win Group H of the World Cup qualifiers. Behind them, Romania and Bosnia will probably fight it out for 2nd place. The opening game is therefore hugely important for Austria, as they face a potential opponent for first place. The visitors from Romania have also already played two games and could pull away early with a win. At the same time, the Romanians lost their important game against direct rivals Bosnia. Their most recent win came against San Marino. In the duel against group favorites Austria, they could collect points that were not necessarily calculated.

Austria must get back on track

The Austrians have been a household name for many experts since last summer at the latest. They played an outstanding group stage at Euro 2024, winning ahead of France and the Netherlands. Although they were beaten by Turkey in the round of 16, their strong performances will be remembered by many. They were also convincing in the Nations League, winning 5:1 against Norway, among others. In the end, they played Serbia for promotion, but did not perform well there. After a 1:1 draw at home, they were beaten 2:0 away from home and thus missed out on promotion. The Austrians have now gone winless in their last three group games. Before the two matches against Serbia, they had already drawn 1-1 with Slovenia. A successful start to the World Cup qualifiers will therefore be extremely important for the team.

Lack of the necessary personnel in the offense

While Austria are very well positioned in defense and central midfield and can keep up with some of the top teams, they have their problems up front. Coach Ralf Rangnick currently only has 2 center forwards at his disposal. Michael Gregoritsch and Marko Arnautovic are both over 30 years old and no longer a regular at their clubs. With Thierno Ballo, Mathias Honsak and Nikolas Veratschnig, Austria also nominated 3 debutants. Thierno Ballo has already had a taste of the national team, but has not been considered in recent years.

Romania is under pressure to make a move right from the start

The national team of Romania has set itself the goal of competing at the 2026 World Cup. To achieve this, they must finish in the top 2 of the group. Together with Austria and Bosnia, it will probably be a battle for the top 3 places. However, they lost their first match against a direct competitor. They were beaten 1:0 by Bosnia at home. This was followed by a 1:5 away win at San Marino, but these 3 points were also included. Now they face their next rivals, Austria. A further defeat would see them fall a long way behind. However, not everything is as bad as expected for Romania. The team has won 7 of its last 8 games. During this period, they have a goal difference of 23:5. They have even scored 3 or more goals in 6 of their last 8 games. Coach Mircea Lucescu has therefore done a very good job so far.

The quality of the squad cannot keep up with the opposition

Romania currently has a squad market value of just under € 77 million, which is significantly less than its opponents. The most valuable professionals at the moment are right-back Andrei Ratiu and right-winger Dennis Man. Another key player in the team is Razvan Marin, who has already scored 6 goals under the new coach. The six-man was also responsible for a goal on the last matchday against San Marino.

Austria clear favorites at home - Our prediction

Although they have not been able to get the results in recent games, Austria is the clear favorite in this home game. However, Romania is very dangerous offensively and scored 5 goals against San Marino on the last matchday. We therefore also believe in scores on both sides.
